SceneSetters #1: Start With the Fantasy (Not the Furniture)

The most expensive set in the world falls flat if it doesn’t serve a fantasy. The cheapest set can feel electric if it does. This is the first rule of set design, and it’s the one creators skip most often because furniture is easier to think about than feeling.

Start with the question, not the shopping list

Before you think about backdrops, lighting, or props, answer one thing: what is this scene supposed to make the viewer feel? Luxurious and untouchable? Intimate and a little messy? Playful and bright? Every physical choice that follows should serve that answer — or it’s just stuff in frame.

Fantasy first, then translate it into physical choices

  • “Untouchable luxury” translates to clean lines, minimal clutter, cool or neutral tones, negative space
  • “Intimate and lived-in” translates to warm light, soft textures, personal objects, a sense of a real room rather than a set
  • “Playful” translates to color, asymmetry, unexpected props, movement in the frame

Notice none of these require a big budget — they require a clear decision made before you touch anything.

The trap of “furniture first” thinking

Buying a nice chair, a good backdrop, or a trending prop before deciding what feeling you’re building is how sets end up looking expensive but flat. The furniture should follow the fantasy, not define it.

A simple exercise before every shoot

  • Write one sentence describing the fantasy — not the content, the feeling
  • List three physical choices (color, texture, light quality) that support that feeling
  • Only then start pulling props, backdrops, and gear that fit those three choices

Closing reminder

A set is a translation device — it takes a feeling in your head and makes it visible on camera. Start with the fantasy every time, and the furniture decisions get dramatically easier because you’re no longer guessing.
